Dear Mrs. Boutilier:
My name is Sidra Zeeshan, I am a senior at Sports and Medical Sciences Academy in Hartford, CT. In order to complete requirements for graduation, I am proposing to perform the capstone project of helping third graders with their reading skills at an after school program called Tree House in JFK elementary school located in Windsor CT. I will be working with a small group of third graders on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 4:30pm to 6pm. As I was growing up I couldn’t wait to get into bed and hear my mom read to me but then my dad had open heart surgery and my two younger siblings didn’t get to experience this. I took on the role and read to them every night and now all of us love reading. I want to be able to share my love for reading to these kids and help them improve their reading skills.
My research question is how does having someone read to you influence your reading ability? I want to see how reading to and with these kids will help their reading skills and what kinds of genres they are most interested in. Reading a book can take a person a long way and does impact their high school career when taking hard English classes because sometimes their reading skills are not as high as they should be. Observing the third graders and seeing each individual’s ability and interest on reading will help me understand my research more. Some artifacts that I plan to collect are pictures of the kids, pictures of their story books, and email screenshots from my mentor to you.
I was in contact with Ms. Jen throughout this whole appeal to volunteer at this program and I had asked her to be my mentor. Jennifer Phelps will be my mentor and she is the family resource center coordinator who overlooks this program. She will help me through this experience and guide me through the process. I have an official meeting with her on Monday, October 17th, 2016. Ms. Jens email is [email protected] and her contact number is (860)-687-2060 x166. My stretch for this project will be public speaking and overcoming my fear. Public speaking has always been a struggle for me and I feel speaking more in front of people will help me a lot. I will have to speak in front of kids, their parents, other adults, and presenting in front of the judges and this kind of exposure will help me be more confident.
Sincerely,
Sidra Zeeshan
