I did my job shadow at Suffield House in Suffield CT and I job shadowed Dr. Ayesha Ahmed. She is a psychiatrist for the elderly and I had an opportunity to shadow her. I was not planning on doing this job shadow only because I had no connections at all. My dad helped get this job shadow but the interesting thing was, it was never for me to shadow an actual psychiatrist. He got me a job shadow at the nursing home mostly to see every field. I had no idea that while I was there I would get this amazing opportunity! I was extremely nervous and kind of scared because I had no idea what I was going to be exposed to at all. Everything went great! The whole staff and elderly loved me! I recognized a lot of familiar faces because I volunteered at the nursing home right next to Suffield House. I followed Dr. Ahmed while she visited her patients and it was interesting to see how even though she wasn’t the type of psychiatrist I wanted to be, she was still taking the steps that a child and adolescent psychiatrist would take. What Dr. Ahmed does is, she checks up on her patients and repeats the same questions for them to hear and understand. While sitting there and listening to the patients I learned a lot about how they feel in a nursing home away from their families and it was truly sad to hear them asking Dr. Ahmed to call their family to come spend time with them. Although seeing how well she was responding to the patients and informing their nurses what they were asking for just taught me how to interact with these type of situations. My day was full of excitement and positivity. I not only got to see Dr. Ahmed but I also got to see all the staff doing their own work but still keeping company to the elderly. I realized that even though my career goal is to become a children and adolescent psychiatrist I know what to expect and how to handle those situations. I wasn’t sure about my major but after this job shadow, I know 100% that I want to major in psychology.
